From the editor: Community Service Rocks!

We are OWU.
That's what President Jones said on Friday when he announced to the campus that we had been nominated for the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Community Service award.
Personally, I think it is really cool that President Obama has recognized OWU for our community service. There are so many different groups, organizations and individuals on campus who put their time and effort into helping others. We should be proud to know that our school is one of three in the nation to be given this prestigious award.
So, to all the students out there who take just a little time out of their busy college schedules to do something for someone else, I say thank you. Thank you for doing what you do to make the day a little better for a complete stranger.
In the world today, there is so much fighting and hate going around that it is nice to know that people are still willing to help those less fortunate than themselves.
There are 1,850 students enrolled here. Of that, roughly 1,700 volunteered their time toward community service in 2009. That's 92 percent of the student body. 92 percent of students at OWU are volunteering out in the community and the world.
Doesn't that make you feel good?
If the answer is yes, then give yourself a pat on the back. Congratulate yourself on a job well done. Because of people like you, the OWU community as a whole is a better group of people.
If the answer is no, and instead you are feeling a churning in your stomach that might be associated with guilt, perhaps the response would be for you to become more involved. There are so many different groups on campus that would love to accept more members. You don't even have to give up large amounts of time. Some service projects only take an hour of your week. Some are even one time things that require you to give up a couple hours of your Saturday.
Do it; you'll feel better about yourself.
There are lots of different types of opportunities. It makes it easy to find one that you feel best fit with. Some groups do religion-based community service, some do children-based community service, some do nursing home-based community serviceā¦the list goes on.
Interested now? Then head up to the fourth floor of HamWill and talk to Sue Pasters, the director of community service learning on campus. She can get you set up with a group that best suits your own needs, while allowing you to help the needs of others.
