It was an up and down week for men's basketball as the Bishops defeated Wabash 73-67 on Jan. 27 for their sixth straight win, only to see their streak come to an end three days later with a hard-fought loss at Hiram, 79-71.
The defeat dropped the Bishops to 6-4 in conference play and 9-10 overall. The Bishops were again led offensively by their young scorers.
As he has done all season, sophomore guard Tim Brady led the Bishops on the road against Wabash, finishing with 22 points on 9-19 shooting, along with 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Sophomore forward Pat Pellerite contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman forward Marshall Morris added 15 points.
The Bishops got off to a good start, jumping out to a 29-13 first half lead. A Wabash 3-pointer followed by a three-point play cut the lead to 31-24, but OWU responded with a 7 point run of their own.
The second-half saw the Bishops increase their lead to 15 with baskets from Brady and senior Brent Pleiman, only to go scoreless for the next 4 minutes and allow Wabash back into the game.
With the lead reduced to 68-63 with 1:19 remaining, the Bishops defense stepped up to secure the victory.
Pellerite had a pair of rejections while senior Rob Gardiner added a pair of free throws to secure the win.
It was a different story three days later against Hiram as the Bishops were unable to come up with another road win.
Brady finished up with 15 points and 3 assists while freshman Andy Winters added 12 points and 2 assists.
The Bishops fell behind 18-8 early on but stormed back to take a 28-26 lead with 4:28 remaining in the first half.
However a string of Hiram 3-pointers either side of halftime left the Bishops trailing 53-41 with 14:56 remaining.
The Bishops were able to cut the lead to 56-53 behind buckets from Brady and junior Dillon McBride, only to see Hiram take off an 11-0 run that put the game out of reach.
Although the winning streak is over, the Bishops can build on the steady contributions from their role players, a good omen as the team prepares for the NCAC tournament.
