The JAYwalkCAM, found on the Ohio Wesleyan website, is a camera that lets anyone with internet access watch people walking from Hamilton-Williams Campus Center (HamWill) to the academic side of campus, or vice versa.

The camera is mounted on the northeast corner of the R.W. Corns Building, facing the JAYwalk.

Its 200-degree sweep of the OWU campus includes HamWill, Mowry Alumni Center, the Campus Sign and Founders' Arch, Sandusky Street, University Hall and Gray Chapel, Slocum Hall, and Sturges Hall.

Sophomore Maggie O'Connell said she had no idea the camera was there.

"From what I'm hearing about it, it doesn't seem beneficial because it doesn't seem like it has a point," O'Connell said.

Sophomore Marissa Ballard said she was also unaware of its presence.

"I just want to know what it's there for, because right now I don't and that makes me uncomfortable," she said.

Users can control the camera for two minutes at any point during the day or night. The camera is also high-quality so that individuals can be easily identified.

Sophomore Irena Pandzic said she sees the advantages of having the camera.

"I think that the JAYwalkCAM is extremely beneficial because, to my knowledge, everything that you can see is being recorded," Pandzic said. "This could be helpful if there were to be a situation where an incident occurred with a student on this area of campus and the police needed to see what happened."

The camera causes questions to arise regarding the invasion of privacy. However, many students say they trust the school enough to not be concerned about that.

"Think about it like this: it's no more an invasion of privacy than it is when the news stations videotape the public in their news specials," said sophomore Katie Jenks.

Sophomore Raphael Fratkin said he agreed.

"I don't think it's an invasion of privacy because it's the same thing as someone standing inside of Corns looking out the window."
