History professor Michael Flamm has the opportunity to teach two courses next semester at the University of San Andrés in Buenos Aires as a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship.

The Fulbright Scholar Program allows for American scholars to experience teaching or research in another country. According to their website, the Fulbright Scholar Program is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries."

With his award, Flamm will teach two U.S. history classes. The first, according to his application, will be a seminar for graduate students and will serve as "an examination of U.S. foreign policy since 1898."

"The goal is to supplement and enrich the understanding these advanced students have of American objectives and policies - as well as the domestic pressures and constraints that often shaped and influenced them," Flamm wrote.

The second course will be an introductory survey which will provide undergraduate students with an overview of U.S. history since 1877.

"[This is] an important task since San Andrés University at present does not offer any instruction at that level in American history," Flamm wrote.

This will be Flamm's second time teaching in Buenos Aires. For two weeks during August 2006, Flamm taught modern U.S. history as a Fulbright Senior Specialist. He said it was an extraordinarily rewarding experience.

"You're forced to see U.S. history through a different lens," Flamm said. "We tend to consider how western Europe perceives the U.S., but during the Cold War South and Central America often viewed the U.S. as a force of oppression."

Flamm said his first experience in Buenos Aires has made him excited and eager to return.

"It's a wonderful place to teach," Flamm said. "I have many friends there and it will be nice to see them again. I will also be able to experience more of the culture and see more of the country."

Flamm said he hopes to bring away a more global perspective from this new experience, including deeper international contacts for Ohio Wesleyan.

"It would be nice to build bridges that would allow for more faculty or student exchanges," Flamm said. "I think it's time to begin looking more towards Central and Latin America."

History professor Barbara Terzian, who had written a letter of recommendation for Flamm's application, said she was delighted to hear he received the award.

"I believe that it will benefit the students he will teach in Argentina and it will be a great experience for him--both professionally and personally," Terzian said. "The Fulbright is a very competitive award and receiving one is very prestigious. So whenever any of our faculty achieves something on that level it reflects very well on OWU. I also believe that our students will benefit because growth as a professor will enhance his teaching here."

Senior Neill McGrann, a member of the History Student Board, said he was excited for Flamm.

"I believe it's a very deserved honor for Dr. Flamm," McGrann said. "His enthusiasm and experience in the classroom are wonderful. Teaching outside of OWU can offer new experiences for Dr. Flamm and he will benefit any school he teaches at."
