The trends throughout the 2009-2010 school year have been different than past years. How could anyone forget "No Shave November?"

This semester, v-neck shirts are all the rage.

Sophomores James DiBiasio and Robbie Shane and junior James Osborne decided they wanted to start something that would change the fashion scene at Ohio Wesleyan.

They decided to make a Facebook group called "V-neck Fridays" to spread the word, and hope to change the way people see v-necks. So far the group has 168 members and counting.

Shane said they wanted something that would allow them to stand out, but also something that they could get their friends and others on board. From the beginning, they had a dream of turning their event into a campus wide phenomena.

"The v-neck shirt is a style that has lost its swagger over the years," Shane said. "Since you do not see it much any more, particularly on men, we decided that would be the perfect type of shirt to use to start our movement."

Osborne said that many people caught onto the idea by simply noticing the difference in their attire and were eager to participate once the trend was explained to them.

"People noticed that we were wearing v-necks and they all asked why. And we simply replied, "why not?" Osborne said. "V-necks are something that haven't been around since the age of tie-dye leggings and jerry curls. We brought it back for something to be in style in a world where trends rule fashion and society in general."

Shane said the idea was also to bring the OWU community together, and that it goes beyond the idea of just wearing a specific shirt every Friday.

"The movement itself was put in place not only as a funny idea, but another way to bring the OWU community together," Shane said. "Our goal is to get as many people as we can to wear a v-neck on Fridays. Hopefully this connection will allow strangers to connect based on the fact that they are wearing the same style shirt and who knows, maybe they'll become best friends from there. Even beyond that though, V-neck Friday is also a movement that we are hoping will encourage people to become better people. I feel that if everyone wears a v-neck shirt on Friday, it will close the gap in the importance of social status between certain cliques."

Shane said that he, Osborne and DiBiasio plan to carry on this tradition for as long as they possibly can.

"V-neck Friday is a lifestyle," Shane said.

"It's more than just wearing some shirt that happens to not have a crew neck. V-necking can be applied to all aspects of life. It's going above and beyond your duty as a citizen. So even if I do not have a v-neck on I am practicing the ways of the V. I will be participating in V-neck Friday my entire life. I hope one day to sit around the fire with my children on a Friday night and explain to them the meaning of V-neck Friday. It's about friends, family, and cool-looking shirts."
